Last year, a luxury British manufacturer from Goodwood showed us a completely new, second-generation limousine Ghost. Also due to the fact that its predecessor from 2009 was based on the BMW 7 Series, the model earned the label baby Rolls-Royce. However, the smallest act of the brand suddenly became the best-selling ever, not only because the carmaker reached for the aluminum architecture from the new Phantom and Cullinan models.

About a year after the discovery of the successor, an established version has been coming to light for several years Black Badge, which already takes the extremely luxurious and ornate Ghost to an even more exclusive level. Although the name suggests the use of primarily black lacquer, clients can actually choose from 44,000 colors or even create their own.

But most customers choose black for the Black Badge. To create the darkest black in the automotive industry, up to 45 kilograms of paint is sprayed and applied to an electrostatically charged white body before oven drying. Two layers of clearcoat are then applied to the vehicle and then hand-polished by a team of four craftsmen to create a high-gloss piano paint for Rolls-Royce.

But it doesn’t end with the body paint itself. Traditional elements such as a statuette Spirit of Ecstasy or the radiator grille Pantheon they retain their luster, but in this case they received a dark finish. Instead of simply painting these components, a specific chromium electrolyte is introduced into the chromium plating process, which is applied together to a stainless steel substrate and darkens the surface treatment. The final depth of the protective layer is only one micrometer, which is approximately one hundred the width of a human hair.

The exteriors are completed by 21 “Bespoke discs, which consist of 22 layers of carbon fiber and a subtle bluish line along the entire length of the body. This is second to the color configuration of the interior. several layers of wood are pressed, with black Bolivian veneer being used as the top base layer.

Improvements do not bypass the technical side either. The iconic 6.75 V12 unit serves another 29 horsepower and 50 Nm more for the Black Badge. The new Ghost can now boast up to 441 kW / 600 hp and 900 Nm of torque. Part of the optimization of the drive system are also modifications of the gearbox and throttle, to further emphasize the power reserve of the reinforced unit. The 8-speed ZF transmission, in conjunction with the steered front and rear axles, regulates the intensity of the driver’s feedback depending on the instructions from the accelerator pedal and steering wheel.
