Former Polish President of Wales accused of perjury – SME.sk

WARSAW. Former Polish President and founder of the Solidarity movement, Lech Wales, has been accused of perjury about documents suggesting that he had worked with communist security forces in the 1970s.

The PAP agency informed about it on Friday.

The allegations made by the Polish Institute of the Memory of the Nation (IPN), a state institution in charge of investigating crimes from the communist era, relate to Wales’ allegations about the documents in the public security file.

According to these files, the Polish secret police recruited Wales as a collaborator, but in 2016 Walesa described the documents as forgeries aimed at defaming him.

Experts and other evidence, according to the IPN, confirmed that these were genuine documents, and the Wales Institute therefore accused them. The former president denies the allegations.

Walesa wrote on Facebook on Friday that the “shameful” allegations were to denigrate him in the public eye and “downplay his historical role.” He also refused to answer the prosecutor’s questions further.

“Historical truths are not set in the prosecutor’s office,” Walesa explained.

“The truth about those times must be decided by historians, and I am not afraid of the verdict of history,” concluded the ex-president, who opposed the Polish communist government backed by the Soviet Union in the 1980s.
