In Slovakia we are used to various astronomical phenomena, but this weekend we have one of the rarest. In our region, it will be possible to observe a unique aurora borealis at night from Saturday to Sunday, informs ČT24.

“On the night from Saturday to Sunday, according to the National Office for the Ocean and Atmosphere, there will be high chances of observing aurora borealis even from medium latitudes, ie also from the Czech Republic and Slovakia,” revealed astronomer and astrophotographer Petr Horálek from the Institute of Physics in Opava.

“If the geomagnetic storm is as strong as astronomers predict, the glow will be observable from our extremities low above the northern horizon, most likely after dark. As he informs iMeteo.sk, the occurrence of aurora borealis in our region is the result of a solar eruption of size X1 (relatively strong eruption), which occurred on Thursday evenings. As a result, a geomagnetic storm will hit Earth next weekend. The number of eruptions is to increase until 2025.
