POLITICS – The match between environmentalists and hunters continues: the EELV presidential candidate Yannick Jadot said, this Friday, October 29, wanting to ban the hunt during weekends and school holidays, also opening a front against slaughter ritual without stunning.

This proposal on hunting has always been a marker for the Greens. But Yannick Jadot, who knows that environmentalists must constantly reassure their project of changing society, there is no risk of restraining the slight momentum it enjoys in the polls (between 7 and 9.5%).

Because in his eyes, the restriction of the right to hunt, a flammable subject in the past, has become consensual among the French. “I will ban hunting on weekends and during school holidays, I want us to be able to walk in nature”, explained the MEP on BFMTV and RMC, as you can. see it below.

To justify it, he mentioned the many hunting accidents affecting individuals, taking the example the day before of a “walker in Haute-Savoie, who was shot next to a cemetery”.

“Take a walk with your dog without being afraid that he will be shot”

For Yannick Jadot, “rurality is the pleasure of landscapes, being able to hike, cycle, walk with your dog without being afraid that he will be shot at the end of the road”. And “stop telling us that it’s the rural people who hunt”, “70% of hunters come from the cities!”

Hunting, which can only be practiced with a permit, is authorized each year during the fall and a large part of the winter. However, the precise dates vary according to the departments because the opening date is decided by each prefect.

A weekly day without hunting, every Wednesday, had already been imposed at the national level in 2000. The measure was repealed in 2003, however leaving the prefects the possibility of establishing it at the departmental level – this is in fact the case in many many departments.

The proposal of Yannick Jadot, who also said he wanted to tackle “Hunting lobbies” influencing according to him Emmanuel Macron, may not improve relations with hunters’ representatives. Willy schraen, the president of the National Federation of Hunters, has several times criticized the Greens for their positions on hunting, mocking “terrorists of the animal cause” and considering that “hunters were the first environmentalists” by their regulatory activity.

Big quack about ritual slaughter

Yannick Jadot ran the risk of opening several fronts at the same time by estimating in the same program, Friday, that it was also necessary to impose stunning before the ritual slaughter of animals for kosher and hallal meat.

Not without a hitch. To the journalist’s question on an outright ban on ritual slaughter, Yannick Jadot replied: “Yes, without ambiguity. (…) No tradition justifies making animals suffer ”. “So in fact Jews and Muslims no longer eat meat?” Said David Guiraud, a spokesperson for La France insoumise on BFMTV.
