G20 2021 Rome, what it is

The G20, with the summit scheduled in Rome on 30 and 31 October 2021, is the event that has been held every year since 1999 and since 2008, a final summit will be held at the level of heads of state and government. In addition to the summit, ministerial meetings, Sherpa meetings (in charge of negotiating and facilitating consensus among leaders), working group meetings and special events take place during the presidency year. In 1999, following the 1997 economic crisis, the finance ministers of the G7 announced the creation of the ‘Group of 20’, with the aim of involving other countries in discussions on the global economy and finance. The first official meeting of the G20 was held in Berlin in December of the same year. Indonesia will pick up the baton from Italy, which in turn had taken over from Saudi Arabia, as the rotating president of the G20 in 2022. The three Countries constitute the current ‘Troika’. The flagship country of ASEAN, which will assume the leadership of the Group having exchanged terms with India, will host the participants in Bali. ‘Recover Together, Recover Stronger’ will be the theme of the summit for which the Indonesian president, Joko Widodo, has created an ad hoc commission. Among the Indonesian priorities for the Bali 2022 summit, the fight against the pandemic and the distribution of Covid-19 vaccines in developing countries stand out.
