Markíza announced today that on December 31, 2021, it will end the operation of the teletext service “Markízatext”. It will happen after 25 years – it has been operating since 1997.

“After a quarter of a century of existence, Markízatext has fulfilled its historical role; from the beginning of 2022, teletext broadcasting will only serve as a platform for providing closed captions for viewers with hearing impairments,” Markíza announced.

Utilization is said to be declining

Television claims that teletext is only a minimally used service and that its viewership has been steadily declining in recent years. From 1 January, Markíza will only offer closed captioning for hearing-impaired viewers via teletext.

“The most popular sites on Markízatexte have long been a TV program and fresh news. Nowadays, the current TV program is easily available within the EPG service. Viewers will find a non-stop news service on the TVnoviny.sk portal, the content of which is also available via HbbTV, ”says Markíza about the replacement.
