Imagine not having to go through difficult maneuvers when parking. The car would simply slip into the parking space. It is not the music of the future. Kia and Hyundai are already finishing with the final technical solution.

It is an age-old dream of many drivers and designers. Make a car that can move transversely. Complicated parking would be a thing of the past. However, it requires wheels that can rotate around their vertical axis by at least 90 degrees. It is not a new idea, a number of design solutions have been created, but so far no one has dared to bring them to the production lines. However, the advent of electric cars, which are structurally simpler and, in particular, can free the drive of unnecessary hardware connections, opens up new possibilities.

However, the Korean concern Hyundai Kia, which also includes the premium brand Genesis, has decided to seize the opportunity. Already in 2018, at the CES consumer electronics exhibition in Las Vegas, he showed the first concept of a car with a transverse movement. And development seems to have progressed considerably since then. The Koreans announced that they had the entire design solution ready. It is based on the integration of the drive, steering and brakes directly into the wheel to make it independent of the drive shafts. These would prevent him from moving freely.

The question remains in which cars we will see a revolutionary solution, which has already passed the final tests. Will it be passenger cars, or rather public or autonomous means of transport?

We think that the premiere will take place more in the field of urban mobility, because wheels with an integrated electric motor are too heavy for conventional models, moreover on the side of unsprung masses, which worsens driving characteristics. But gradual penetration into other models, especially the models, may not be ruled out.
