The NHL leadership has fined the Chicago Blackhawks a $ 2 million fine for inadequate internal procedures and a lack of response to allegations made by then-video coach Brad Aldrich of sexually harassing players.

The league announced the fine after the findings of an independent investigation into sexual harassment incidents, which Aldrich was supposed to commit to two former players in 2010, were published.

The NHL and the Blackhawks agreed that half of the fine would go directly to support local organizations and the Chicago community to help victims of sexual and other violence.

The investigation included interviews with 139 people, including former and current team players. It also collected and analyzed more than 100 GB of electronic records and 49 boxes of physical records.

Investigators have shown that a meeting was held on 23 May 2010 to address the accusation of an unnamed player against Aldrich. It was attended by John McDonough, Jay Blunk, Al MacIsaac, Stan Bowman, Joel Quenneville and Kevin Cheveldayoff.

In the end, the stakeholders decided not to take any action. They didn’t arrive until June 14, when the Blackhawks completed their pilgrimage for the Stanley Cup. Aldrich was given the opportunity to resign or be investigated. He chose to resign and the investigation has not taken place.

Both Bowman and MacIsaac resigned from their positions in Chicago after the release of these findings. The former also resigned as general manager of the US Olympic team.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said on Tuesday that he also plans to meet with Quenneville, who is currently coaching the Florida Panthers, and Cheveldayoff, who is general manager of Winnipeg, in the “near future”. Their involvement in the incident will be discussed.

Bettman added that he would keep the trial of the two participants in the controversial meeting until after their meeting with Bowman. Neither Quenneville nor the Panthers commented, Cheveldayoff issued a statement saying he would share with the commissioner everything he knew about the matter.
