The race to submit sponsorships is now well open for the candidates for the nomination of the Republicans (LR). Xavier Bertrand’s team reported on Twitter that it had deposited 427 signatures of elected officials, Wednesday, October 27. Relatives of the president of the Hauts-de-France region claim more than 500 signatures, that is to say a number of sponsorships well above the required minimum of 250 signatures set by the organizing committee of the congress to validate the participation candidates in the party’s internal ballot, to be held from 1er to December 4.
The figure of 500 signatures is also symbolic, since it is the number of signatures necessary to validate any candidacy for the Elysee. Mr. Bertrand, who has long considered going it alone for the presidential election, had left the party in 2017, before announcing his participation in the race for the nomination of the party then his re-membership in mid-October.
The symbolic milestone of 100,000 members crossed
Another candidate for the nomination of the party, Michel Barnier informed Europe 1, Wednesday, that he also had more than 500 sponsorships, “Mainly LR elected representatives, in around 70 departments”.
On September 25, the representatives of the LR federations had opted, after a vote and a digital congress, for an internal vote in order to nominate the party’s candidate for the presidential election, rather than for a primary open to non-members. The organizing committee of the poll then clarified the rules and the timetable for the vote. Two conditions were imposed on the candidates, in addition to the commitment to respect the values of the party: they had to submit their candidacy before October 13 and secure the support of at least 250 local and national elected representatives from at least 30 departments before the beginning of November. Besides MM. Bertrand and Barnier, four candidates are trying to obtain their sponsorships: Valérie Pécresse, Eric Ciotti, Philippe Juvin and Denis Payre.
To be able to vote and decide between the six candidates, the deadline for joining LR is set for November 16. The president of the party, Christian Jacob, announced on Wednesday on Twitter that the symbolic milestone of 100,000 registrants had just been crossed. A breath of fresh air for this movement which fell to 60,000 members in 2019, after having totaled some “237,000 up to date five years ago”, recalled Mr. Jacob, Monday.
