Last weekend, not only the women’s but also the men’s ski season began in Tyrol. From a height of 3,040 meters above sea level, two Slovak skiers – brothers Adam and Andreas Žampovci – also started down the hill as part of a huge slalom in Sölden.
Although the more experienced Adam fought his way to the 2nd round, he took 28th place in it. So he was not completely satisfied. Andreas did not get to the 2nd round.
Adam was exposed to a better result by a common denominator in both rounds – the steep part of the hill. “It simply came to my notice then. I didn’t get the steep part again, I didn’t go there what I wanted. The top and bottom were OK, but I missed the middle part. We have the first test behind us. There will be enough time for us to work on the slope. The next ‘giant’ will be in Val-d’Isère and there is a clear slope. There is work to be done. ”
However, he did not hang his head and found positives. “At least I have some points. It’s better than not even advancing to the 2nd round. Every point is very rare. The level and competition is extremely high, we have to take and work a little more. The competition is not sleeping at all. “
The goal ahead of the next huge slalom, which will be at the beginning of December in the mentioned French resort, is so clear. “We will try to find a place where we can train on a steep hill. Although it is difficult because they often do not want to let us go anywhere. We have to try, ” Adam Žampa revealed a problem that bothers several competitors from smaller teams. Ester Ledecká, for example, also talked about him.
Large teams and alpine powers such as Austria, Switzerland, France and Italy do not want to play smaller teams. If it happens that a skier from a smaller team is a big threat to them, the door will close completely.
So who do Slovak skiers get used to working with? “We try to cooperate with Žan Krajnec or Filip Zubčič, but it is not easy. They also try to imagine good conditions for themselves and no one wants to just keep up the competition. It is not easy to have good and quality conditions for training. Here and there, small teams come together to compare, ” said Zampa. The Slovenian Krajnec took third place in Sölden and the Croatian Zubčič ninth.
Logically, the question arises whether cooperation with Petra Vlhová, who is also a large team, would not help. “You can’t mix apples with pears, women’s skiing is one thing, men’s is another. It would probably be great for girls. They ride other skis, a slightly different track. It’s something completely different. As sparring is definitely nice for them, but I don’t know if it would give us anything, ” Adam Žampa said.
