The exhibition “Human rights in the heart of Europe” will be inaugurated on Friday at the National Central Library in Rome, which explores, one hundred years after his birth, the European dimension of the dissident scientist Andrei Sakharov whose destiny “personified the enlightened conscience of the world and transmitted the sense of a political commitment that would remain relevant until today “. The figure of Sakharov “is as complex as it is fundamental for the contribution made to physics, dissent, civil society, the democratic movement, nuclear non-proliferation, the memory of the victims of repression in the Soviet Union and the defense of human rights and of fundamental freedoms “, underlines Memorial Italia which, together with the Gramsci Foundation and the Circolo Fratelli Rosselli Foundation, presents in Italy the exhibition organized by Memorial France at the Municipality of Paris with the title” Sakharov, les droits humains au cœur de l’Europe ” . The first part of the exhibition is dedicated to the figure of Sakharov, “the undisputed protagonist of our history: his scientific activity, dissent, the struggle for human rights, exile, the 1975 Nobel Prize, his political commitment to democratization of the Soviet system “. (continued) The second part focuses instead on the personalities who have been awarded the “Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought”, up to the Russian opponent in prison, Aleksei Navalny, who was awarded, just a few days ago, the recognition for 2021, for “the great courage with its attempts to restore freedom of choice for the Russian people”. The Award established by the European Parliament in 1988 is a recognition dedicated to Sakharov with the aim of rewarding personalities or organizations that have dedicated their life to the defense of human rights and freedom of thought. Presenting various personalities and organizations awarded with this award, the exhibition, which will remain open to the public until November 19, is aimed at a wide audience “with the aim of making this great protagonist of the twentieth century better known, his history and his work and sensitize viewers to the cause of human rights “. Stefano Campagnolo (Director of the National Central Library of Rome), Riccardo Mario Cucciolla (Memorial Italia), François Deweer ( Memorial France), Sergej Lukasevskij (Sakharovskij Centr), Silvio Pons (Gramsci Foundation), Valdo Spini (Circolo Fratelli Rosselli Foundation).
