Japan’s Princess Mako married her unborn fiancé on Tuesday, lawyer Keia Komura. This is the first time in the country’s post-war history that a wedding in an imperial family took place without the traditional rituals that the princess renounced. This was reported by the DPA and AFP.

According to the Japanese media, the imperial court handed over to the authorities on Tuesday the documents necessary for the official registration of the marriage. By marrying Komur, Princess Mako officially leaves the Japanese imperial family, writes the DPA.
Princess Mako, who is the niece of the Japanese emperor Naruhit, also renounced the financial contribution that is usually provided to women from the imperial family when they marry unborn men. According to local media, Mako will allegedly give up up to 1.12 million euros in this way. Princess Mako plans to leave Japan and start a new life in the United States, where Komuro (30) works. He moved there in 2018 to continue his law studies, which was also seen in Japan as an attempt to ease media pressure. He caused a post-traumatic stress disorder in a 30-year-old princess. Komuro in New York recently completed his studies and passed the bar exam, writes DPA.
The young couple announced their engagement in 2017, stating that the wedding was to take place in November 2018. At the beginning of 2018, however, there was a report that the wedding would be postponed for two years – officially because more time was needed for its preparations. In addition, the coronation of Princess Uncle Naruhit as emperor, which took place in May 2019, was to be given priority.
At the time, however, Princess Mako came under fire from media critics for Komuro’s allegedly outstanding debts to her ex-fiancé. The man accuses Komurova of not returning to him more than four million yen (about 30,000 euros), which she allegedly borrowed from him to finance part of her son’s studies. This still outstanding debt has caused a scandal in Japan, as members of the imperial family are expected to behave flawlessly.
