The 100-meter Olympic champion, together with his companions in the 4×100-meter relay, will be the protagonist on Thursday 5 August (for Italy, in the night between Wednesday and Thursday) in the heats, the only qualifying round before the final. The national team dt Antonio La Torre, with the support of the sprint manager Filippo Di Mulo, defined the quartet that will run at 4:30 Italian time (11:30 local time): in order, Lorenzo Patta, Marcell Jacobs, Eseosa Desalu and Filippo Tortu. The task is not the simplest: Italy will run in the second heat (4:39), in the seventh lane, together with, among others, Canada, the United States, China and Germany. The formula does not allow for distractions: the first three in the final, with two repechage times. The blue quartet, in addition to Jacobs, rests its foundations on two Olympic semifinalists, the excellent Filippo Tortu (there are not many who can boast two athletes with a Pb of less than 10 seconds) and Eseosa Desalu (among the best two hundred Europeans), with the young Patta, who emerged this year with the 10.13 in Savona, a time that is worth eighth place in the continental lists of the year (with Jacobs obviously in first position, and Tortu in fifth). The statistics: three medals centered at the turn of the Second World War: the bronze of Los Angeles 1932 (Giuseppe Castelli, Ruggero Maregatti, Gabriele Salviati, and Edgardo Toetti), the silver of Berlin 1936 (Orazio Mariani, Gianni Caldana, Elio Ragni and Tullio Gonnelli) and the bronze of London 1948 (Enrico Perucconi, Antonio Siddi, Carlo Monti and Michele Tito). The last time in the final was in Sydney 2000, when among the eight were Francesco Scuderi, Alessandro Cavallaro, Maurizio Checcucci and Andrea Colombo.
