Tokyo 2020, the first transgender athlete eliminated from the Games

Three unsuccessful attempts in weightlifting at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Laurel Hubbard, the first openly transgender athlete in history who officially competes in the Olympics in a different gender category from the one she was born, did not make it. The New Zealand trans woman, born 43 years ago in Auckland as Gavin Hubbard, finished the Games after failing to lift 120kg and after two failed attempts to lift 125kg. “I am not entirely unaware of the controversies surrounding my participation in the Games – said Hubbard after leaving – and for this I want to thank in particular the Olympic Committee” for reaffirming that “sport is for everyone, it is inclusive and accessible”.
