The Var in Formula 1 in the 2022 World Championship after the controversies that characterized the epilogue of the last season, with the triumph of Max Verstappen in the Abu Dhabi GP. “To assist the race director in the decision-making process, a Virtual Race Control Room will be created. Like the Video Assistance Referee, Var, in football, will be positioned in one of the FIA Offices as a backup outside the circuit”, is the announcement made by the new president of the International Motoring Federation (FIA), Mohamed Ben Sulayem, for the use next season of a similar system in Var to assist race officials on race days. Team principals will no longer be able to communicate directly with Race Control. The interviews can only take place following a certain procedure: “Direct radio communications during the match, currently broadcast live on all TVs, will be removed to protect the referee from any pressure and to allow him to take decisions calmly”. The procedures by which the drivers will resume their position after the intervention of the safety car will also be reviewed. The news came on the day when the removal of Michael Masi from the role of race director of Formula 1 was announced, another step taken in the wake of what happened in the last grand prix last year. Masi was harshly criticized by Mercedes in Abu Dhabi for his decision to have a final ‘free’ lap after the safety car entered the track. Just the last lap allowed Verstappen, at the wheel of the Red Bull, to make the decisive overtaking on the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and to win the world title.
