Olympics, Serena Williams will not go to Tokyo

Serena Williams will not participate in the Tokyo Olympics. The 39-year-old, who has four gold medals and made her Sydney Games debut in 2000, had previously said she was reluctant to go because she couldn’t take her three-year-old daughter Olympia with her. Speaking at her pre-Wimbledon press conference, Williams said: “I’m not actually on the Olympic list, not that I’m aware of. If so, then I shouldn’t be there.” The US champion did not offer detailed explanations: “There are many reasons why I made my Olympic decision. I don’t want to talk about it today. Maybe another day. I’m sorry.” Williams joins Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem, two other tennis greats who will desert Tokyo. Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic have not yet committed to participating.
