Tedeschi (Sin): “We need more neurologists and more in-depth training”

“More neurologists and more in-depth training are needed.” This was stated by the director of the Neurological and Neurophysiopathology Clinic, Aou Luigi Vanvitelli of Naples and past president of the Italian Society of Neurology (Sin), Gioacchino Tedeschi, speaking at the closing conference of the ‘NeuroMLab’ project, (Neurology Management Lab) organized by Biogen and SDA Bocconi, under the patronage of Sin, which involved neurologists, nurses, pharmacists, health directors and other players in the health system. The president of Sin continued his reflection, illustrating the other challenges that the National Health Service must face in order to provide those who deal with this complex subject with all the tools to be able to operate and progress and at the same time to guarantee patients care at the vanguard. “Neurology is highly complex because it follows complex pathologies with a high incidence on the population. Just think that among the top 10 disabling diseases in the world, three are neurological diseases and they are migraines, strokes and dementia”, explained Tedeschi . “Fortunately – he underlined – we have seen an unexpected diagnostic and therapeutic progress, but to manage this complexity there is a need, in my opinion, to have more trained neurologists, to extend the duration of the specialization school from 4 to 5 years. , to have more neurologists and more complex neurology operating units. I also believe that, as the pandemic has made us understand, there is a need to restructure the NHS, defining more precisely what first-level or third-level hospital means, since only in this latter structure are the complex neurology units found ”.
