Sunday, May 30, under the patronage of the President of the Republic, the World Day of Multiple Sclerosis is celebrated, the WorldMSDay, promoted by the Italian Multiple Sclerosis Association (Aism) with the International Multiple Sclerosis Federation (MSIF). With the ‘World MS Day’ and with ‘Welcome back Gardensia’ (28, 29, 30 May) begins a rich calendar of events of the national week of the SM – the appointment with information on the disease – which will take place until 6 June . During this information week Aism will present the 2021 SM Barometer, will meet the institutions to talk about health, work and inclusion and research. And it will be an opportunity to launch the process of building the SM 2025 agenda together with all the stakeholders. #MSconnections is the World Day hashtag that will be held in over 70 countries around the world. The theme is dedicated to connections. “I connect, we connect” is the slogan of this day in which the whole world is connected – ready to restart after the emergency – # together with the strongest to overcome the barriers and obstacles that risk isolating people with MS and limiting their full social inclusion Multiple sclerosis, a serious disease of the central nervous system, is a leading cause of disability in young people. Chronic, unpredictable and often progressively disabling, it affects one person every 3 hours, it is mostly diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40, mostly in women with a ratio of 2 to 1 compared to men. There are 2.5 million people with MS in the world, 700,000 in Europe and 130,000 in Italy alone. Multiple sclerosis has a strong social impact: 5 billion euros is the average annual cost of the disease. It is a social emergency. World SM Day is celebrated on May 30th with a global choir that unites all the countries of the world in live streaming at 2 pm to the tune of U2’s “Beautiful Day”. For Italy, two girls from the Aism movement, Marina and Rachele, participate. The sacred music concert by tenor Marco Voleri, a person with SM, will be streamed on the social channels of Aism, with the participation of Beatrice Venezi. Strong TV awareness with stories of people with multiple sclerosis in the main television broadcasts. Furthermore, on May 28th, 29th and 30th, ‘Welcome back Gardensia’, the Aism event to raise funds for research and to continue to guarantee the responses of care, assistance and support for people with MS in the area, now more fundamental than ever. From now on it is possible to book your own Gardenia plant, with a minimum donation of 15 euros, by contacting the Provincial Section of your city whose list is available on http://www.aism.it/gardensia. From May 31 to June 6 there will be a full program of initiatives for the National Week of MS, the annual AISM appointment with information on the disease. It opens on May 31 with the presentation of the 2021 Multiple Sclerosis Barometer which photographs the reality of MS in Italy. The day will be an opportunity to launch appeals to institutions regarding health, work and research, also in light of the challenges of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (Pnrr). Research, health, work and social inclusion are themes that will also have a central weight in the information events within the National Week: 3 live webcasts will be held on 1, 3 and 4 June with different actors involved in the world of multiple sclerosis . A moment of dialogue and sharing with the institutions that brings out the plan of collaboration and joint work between institutions, stakeholders and Aism. We will discuss the priorities on which to develop programs and actions together, for the immediate future, we will talk about the added value brought by co-responsibility between people, organizations, institutions. June 5 will be a day dedicated to research in which Fism researchers, all connected in streaming, will take stock of the latest scientific news on multiple sclerosis.
