Cagliari, man sets himself on fire: agent saves him but is burned

A police officer was burned while saving a man who was setting himself on fire. It happened this morning in Assemini, Cagliari. Around 6.30 a 50-year-old, of Romanian origin, called 113 reporting that he was going to a bar in Assemini to set another person on fire. Two agents arrived on the spot, while the owner of the restaurant was notified of what was happening. Upon their arrival, the policemen found the Romanian citizen sitting on a bench, with a bucket of petrol placed next to his legs and tried to stop him from carrying out his crazy gesture. But the man, with a sudden and unexpected gesture, ignited a spark that gave rise to a flame that enveloped him. At the same moment the patrol leader threw himself on the 50-year-old in an attempt to put out the flames, also being involved. The colleague quickly grabbed the fire extinguisher on the service car and then a fire hydrant taken from an adjacent room and managed to taming the flames by freeing the injured colleague from his clothing, in order to limit far more serious consequences. On the spot, the 118 staff gave the first treatment to the two injured and then transferred the policeman to the Monserrato University Hospital and the 50-year-old to Brotzu in red code. During the morning, the policeman was transferred as a precaution to the Major Burns Center of the Santissima Annunziata Civil Hospital in Sassari. “I express my closeness to the State Police agent who was seriously burned in the Cagliari municipality of Assemini to save a man to the flames “. This was stated by the Minister of the Interior, Luciana Lamorgese. The owner of the Interior Ministry underlined how the policeman’s gesture once again testifies “the spirit of self-denial and the courage of the women and men of the police forces, always alongside the citizens, also putting their personal safety at risk”.
