Etna, eruption with a fountain of lava and ash last night with the volcano that gave birth to a new paroxysm, the second from May 19, when the Ingv observed the lava fountain ‘Franco Battiato’ – dedicated to the artist because followed the night after his death – with a lava fountain and ash emission, carried by the wind towards the South-East. The spectacular phenomenon, which was visible from far away, began around 01.34, with the resumption of Strombolian activity and lasted several hours, affecting the South-East crater from which a lava flow also emerged. At 04.54, as reported by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology-Etna Observatory (Ingv-Oe) of Catania, the lava fountain activity, which had its phase of greatest energy around 04.10, ended. There is still a small lava overflow along the flank of the South-East crater which expands in a South-West direction. The new eruptive phase of Etna had no impact on the operation of the Catania international airport.
