Msf: “800 migrants landed in Lampedusa in one day”

-

“Among the migrants disembarked there are also cancer patients who cannot be treated in the countries they flee from, but the vast majority are victims of torture and violence”. Alida Serrachieri is the project medical referent of Doctors Without Borders in Lampedusa and for weeks she has spent many hours of the day and night on the Favaloro pier welcoming migrants. “More than 800 people have arrived since midnight,” he explains in an interview with Adnkronos. But what is the health situation? “Many of them come from two or three days of travel – says Serrachieri – we landed both people who left Libya and Tunisia, those from Libya were particularly tried. Among them there are many victims of torture. They are of different nationalities, Sudanese, of sub-Saharan Africa, and then of course Tunisia “. “Most are adult men and unaccompanied minors – he says – but there are also women and children”. And the women have suffered “almost all sexual violence”. Doctor Alida Serrachieri has been working for Doctors Without Borders since 2017. But it is her first time in Lampedusa, but in the past she has also done rescue at sea. “From my first experience in 2016 – he says – there are always the same stories of violence and abuse, of inhumanity, in short”. But what does an MSF doctor feel during a landing? “It is a mix of sensations – says the doctor – in the moment of rescue the feeling that prevails is that of hope, a sense of contentment and then over time it turns into sadness because listening to them we perceive their difficult stories, full of pains “. And remember that “there are countries that are not on the list of those countries that are not considered safe, Afghanistan, for example, was not on the list, until a few weeks ago. The concept of a safe country leaves the time it finds”. .
