‘Suspended’ electricity and gas bills, the proposal of the diocese of Rome

An extraordinary collection for the Caritas Family Fund, to be used for a ‘suspended bill’ of electricity and gas. This is the proposal of the diocese of Rome on the occasion of the World Day of the Poor, which will be held on 13 November. The announcement was made by Cardinal Vicar Angelo De Donatis, who as the day approaches, writes to the parish priests, men and women religious of the diocese, exhorting everyone to make a concrete gesture towards those most in need. “I invite you to promote in the communities an extraordinary collection of offers to be allocated to the Family Fund of the diocesan Caritas – writes the cardinal -, aimed precisely at supporting people and families in greater difficulty in the face of exponential growth. The harvest can be the result of a day of fasting, an extraordinary harvest, a free offer for “a suspended bill” or other signs of sharing “. In Rome and beyond, in fact, continues the Pope’s vicar for the diocese of Rome, “for an ever increasing number of people and families the possibility of paying their respective bills for electricity and gas consumption is failing. My thoughts cannot fail to go to the fragile families who find themselves in difficulty about this: lonely elderly people, small children, serious illnesses and various disabilities. Alongside this collection, there is also the need to raise awareness that we need to change our consumption habits, in our homes, in the workplaces, in the environments we frequent “. The Day” comes this year at a time marked by suffering – he still reflects – and by a world in apprehension about what is happening in the tormented Ukrainian territory. We live in a context also marked by the numerous regional wars that have been going on for some time, by the consequences of more than two years of pandemic from Covid-19, by the serious economic and social effects of the energy crisis which is affecting many regions of the world “.
