The Palio di Siena, dedicated to the Madonna Assunta in Cielo, was won by the Contrada del Leocorno with the horse Violenta da Clodia, mounted by the jockey Giovanni Atzeni known as Tittia. Immediately the party broke out in Piazza del Campo, with the contradaioli in white and orange with blue lists who raised the banner painted by the artist Andrea Anastasio as a sign of victory. The jockey Tittia won his ninth career Palio with today’s one, conquering the last four consecutive victories of his career. The previous victory of the Contrada del Leocorno dates back to August 16, 2007 with the jockey Jonathan Bartoletti known as Scompiglio. The Contrada in the centuries-old history of the Sienese festival thus reached its 30th victory. The Violenta da Clodia horse is a 9-year-old bay female, in her fourth Career. The Palio dell’Assunta is traditionally held on August 16, but this year the Career was held in Piazza del Campo today – August 17 – after the postponement decided by the Municipality following the storm that made the tufa track impracticable and unsafe. The Palio of last July 2 (after two years of stoppage due to Covid) was won by the Contrada del Drago, with the horse Zio Frac, a rookie seven-year-old bay gelding, ridden by Tittia himself, considered one of the strongest jockeys of the Palio.
