Marmolada, bad weather arrives: yellow alert

Bad weather arrives on the Marmolada, where yesterday an avalanche caused 7 deaths. A yellow alert has been issued by the Civil Protection throughout the provincial territory of Trento until midnight today. In the next few hours and until the late evening, when the passage of a cold front is expected, pulses of unstable air will favor the development of locally scattered intense showers and thunderstorms moving towards the east. The forecast of the timing, intensity and location of intense thunderstorms is affected by considerable uncertainty but where they will develop, in small areas, abundant rainfall can occur in a short time, frequent lightning strikes, hailstorms and strong gusts of wind. Following the weather forecasts and on the basis of the assessments carried out, critical issues are considered possible mainly due to: erosions and landslides in the hydrographic network, surface runoffs with possible material transport phenomena, floods, landslides and rapid flows; strong gusts of wind, hail and lightning. These critical issues, the bulletin closes, can also cause inconvenience and effects (including interruptions) on the road network and on the overhead communication and service distribution networks, and precisely because of bad weather the helicopter with Prime Minister Mario Draghi on board bound for Canazei it was diverted to Verona from where it will then drive to the Canazei Civil Protection Coordination Center where it was expected. The difficulties linked to the weather conditions did not in fact allow the premier’s helicopter to land in Canazei and therefore the return will be in Verona.
