Policemen killed in Trieste, on Tuesday 17 August it is decided whether Meran remains in prison

It will be the Trieste court that will have to decide, in the hearing scheduled for August 17, whether Alejandro Stephan Meran, accused of the murder of two policemen, should remain in prison. This was decided by the judges of the first section of the Supreme Court which, considering the request for replacement of the precautionary custody measure in prison to be inadmissible, qualified the defense appeal as an appeal to be discussed before the Trieste court. This is what Adnkronos learns. The lawyers Paolo and Alice Bevilacqua, defenders of the 31-year-old of Dominican origin accused of the double crime and of seven attempted murders of as many policemen injured in the shooting of 4 October 2019 at the police headquarters in Trieste, had appealed to the Supreme Court – last July – against the decision of the investigating judge Massimo Tomassini to reject, as inadmissible, the request to replace the prison with a provisional security measure, that is, the transfer of the accused to a facility suitable for psychiatric care. A transfer that the lawyers are soliciting in light of the advice of their experts and those of the prosecutor who converge in recognizing the total defect of mind for the young man. Next week we will return to the courtroom to discuss whether Meran should face the trial in prison: immediate procedure – judgment characterized by the lack of a preliminary hearing – the first hearing of which was set for next 10 September, just under two years after the murder of agents Pierluigi Rotta and Matteo Demenego. In Meran, detained in the Verona prison, the judge’s experts recognized the partial defect of mind and the ability to stay in the trial. Precisely on the ability to understand and want, given the discrepancy of the conclusions between consultants and experts, the entire debate could be played out.
