Miccio (Emergency): “Serie A and Serie B refugees, there are not only Ukrainians”

“Migration is a phenomenon that must be managed and not denied, unfortunately we see that in practice there are Serie A and Serie B refugees”. This is what Rossella Miccio, president of Emergency says, interviewed by Adnkronos on the occasion of World Refugee Day, which is celebrated on 20 June. A “symbolic” day, according to Miccio, which must contribute to opening a reflection, because “today we have all the tools to be a welcoming society, we are demonstrating it with those who flee from Ukraine, it would be right that we do the same with those who are on the run in the rest of the world, also starting to choose international policies that really aim at building and maintaining peace and not at those armed conflicts “. “We are absolutely happy that Europe has shown itself so generous towards Ukrainian citizens who are fleeing a terrible war: we welcome the open doors, the facilities and all the formal and informal reception possibilities that have been put into practice to help over 7 million Ukrainians who have left their country, of which about 130,000 arrived in Italy. An approach – argues the president of Emergency – that should also be normal for all the others fleeing wars and persecutions, regardless of their country of origin Unfortunately, this does not happen in reality.On the contrary, despite the fact that the numbers of those arriving by sea or by land are far lower than the Ukrainians who have arrived in Italy, there is still talk of an emergency situation, unmanageable, of lack of resources. So I would say that yes, in practice they exist between Serie A and Serie B refugees “. “The right of asylum is an achievement of modern society that should never be exploited for political purposes. Our Constitution – Miccio recalls – guarantees it and it must be remembered that it is an individual right, it does not depend on the country one leaves but on the situation. from which we are running away: all the refugees who come to us should have at least the possibility that their life path will be examined and in the meantime be welcomed in a decent way. This, however, in our country does not happen for many now. years”. The compass of rights “is to take people’s lives more into consideration, to remind ourselves that we were born equal in dignity and rights”. “Although the pandemic has taught us that by taking care of everyone we can live better together, the inequality in access to care is still very strong”, continues Miccio who, citing Article 32 of the Constitution, speaks of the right to health of each an individual too often “disregarded” in many ways, “due to bureaucratic problems, linguistic obstacles, political will.
