Yellow alert for the erupting volcano Etna. From the assessments that emerged during today’s meeting with the Competence Centers and the Civil Protection Department of the Sicilian Region, the Civil Protection Department has ordered the transition of the alert level from ‘green’, which corresponds to ordinary activity, to the ‘yellow’ for the Etna volcano, and the consequent activation of the operational phase of ‘attention’. This assessment is based on the reports of phenomenologies and on the hazard assessments made available by the Competence Centers which for Etna are the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (Etna Observatory and Palermo Section), the Earth Science Department of the University of Florence and the National Research Council Institute for the Electromagnetic Detection of the Environment. The raising of the level determines the strengthening of the volcano’s monitoring system and the activation of a constant information link between the scientific community and the other components and operational structures of the National Civil Protection Service. The Civil Protection Department shares this information with the civil protection structure of the Sicilian Region which, especially in relation to local impact scenarios, alerts the territorial civil protection structures and adopts any measures in response to emergency situations. local level, which may have frequent variations, it should be noted that a situation of enhanced disequilibrium of the volcano persists. It should therefore be borne in mind that alert level changes may not necessarily take place sequentially or gradually, as sudden or sudden variations in activity, even completely unforeseen, are always possible.
