The season of ‘summer’ storms is coming: from tomorrow, gradually, a succulent appetizer of these phenomena will arrive, from North to South, on our beautiful country. For at least a week it will rain every day, there will be frequent thunderstorms, thanks to the entry of more unstable air from Scotland: we will have a rather ‘turbulent’ beginning of May. But what is meant by ‘it will rain every day’ and ‘frequent thunderstorms’? As the word itself says, thunderstorms will be ‘thunderstorms’, i.e. they will last for a certain time: for this reason, saying that it will rain every day does not mean that the weather will be disturbed for hours, indeed in the next days we will have an alternation of sun and showers and maybe we will also see some nice rainbow. The average life of a storm is in fact 50 minutes, often associated with about 3 convection cells lasting around 20 minutes. The convective or thunderstorm cell represents the single cloud structure with high vertical development within which the motions of the drops of water are particularly intense: during a thunderstorm of one hour, two or three thunderstorm cells often arise and die. Therefore, forecasting a week of thunderstorms does not mean bad weather with gray skies and umbrellas open for 12 hours. In particular, starting tomorrow, the entry of Scottish air will cause some downpours in the North-West, in the evening extension to Upper Tuscany.
