Etna, Curcio (Civil Protection): “On volcanic ash damage involving other subjects”

We have to work hard to involve others. Phenomena such as that of volcanic ash cannot reside only in the local or regional community or in a single national entity ”. This was stated in Catania by the Head of National Civil Protection, Fabrizio Curcio, on the sidelines of the meeting with the Governor of Sicily, Nello Musumeci, on the emergency of volcanic ash fall and consequent damage caused by the dozens of paroxysmal events on Etna ” . “Our paths – adds Curcio – are interconnected. This ash phenomenon ranges from rejection to health to reuse. It is therefore evident that it must do its part. We are determined to continue this activity together ”. Nello Musumeci, on the ash issue, underlines instead how “eight million euros should be enough to meet the expenses faced up to now. Our goal is to create a fund to avoid chasing the emergency, given that that of the fall of volcanic ash in the towns of Catania since it is no longer an episodic event but unfortunately very frequent. We must be able to create a regional fund, in addition to the national one, which can be accessed after reporting, so we can put the municipalities in a position to be able to intervene within a reasonable time. “” There have been forty-seven, from February to today – recalls the Governor of Sicily – the paroxysmal events with the fall of ashes on the Etna villages. We are therefore not faced with a rare and extraordinary phenomenon but we can say almost ordinary and we do not know what the future holds “. “There is not only the quality of life – adds Musumeci – and the inconvenience on the streets of urban centers but there is damage to crops, hanging fruit, expenses to be faced to clean the roofs and terraces of the houses, the drains” “We have therefore raised the question of the need to meet expenses – finally highlights the Governor – by putting together eight million euros between the resources of the national civil protection department and the regional resources of our civil protection department”.
