Iss: “XJ and XL variants in Sardinia, tracks in Piedmont and Calabria”

The presence of Covid sub-variants in Italy is not homogeneous. The recombinants XJ and XL of Omicron 1 and 2 (BA.1 and BA.2) are concentrated in Sardinia, with traces in Piedmont and Calabria, detected by the latest flash survey on Sars-CoV-2 variants conducted by the Institute superior of health and the Ministry of Health, together with the regional laboratories and the Bruno Kessler Foundation. According to the results of the rapid survey – which took place on April 4 and in which all the Regions / Pa took part, for a total of 115 laboratories that sequenced 2,018 samples – the prevalence of XJ is 0.5% with a range from 0 to 11.6%, while that of XL is 0.9% with a range from 0 to 20.9%. And looking at the table that details the presence of the various components of the ‘Omicron family’ in regions and pa, it can be seen that XJ and XL ‘live’ for now in Sardinia, where the prevalence is 11.6% for XJ and 20 .9% for XL; XJ also appears in Piedmont (2.3%) and XL also in Calabria (6.1%), while both are ‘not received’ in all the other regions / public administrations.
