Mayor Cinisi prohibits the sale of gadgets with ‘The Godfather’

No more selling objects or gadgets with ‘The Godfather’ or that “recall or praise the mafia”. This is foreseen by an order signed by the mayor of Cinisi (Palermo), Giangiacomo Palazzolo. Cinisi is the town of Peppino Impastato, killed in 1978 by the mafia for having publicly attacked Cosa Nostra. “Considering that the history of the Municipality of Cinisi has been tragically characterized by the horrible presence of the mafia phenomenon, understood both as a presence in the territory of the criminal association and as an archaic mentality as opposed to the culture of Legality” and that “the redemption of the Community has taken place through a gradual cultural change that has bound the criminal structure to the margins of the social, economic and political life of the country “, reads the ordinance. And “it is believed, however, that even today, the concrete risk persists that the mafia subculture may find new life in acts, behaviors and attitudes tending to create the social conditions for a revitalization of the mafia phenomenon”, the mayor Palazzolo has decided to ban the sale of gadgets such as ‘The Godfather’. “Recognizing that any type of attitude, even of mere indifference, of favor towards the mafia must be continuously and strongly opposed, promoting cultural, social and administrative initiatives suitable for eliminating the harmful capacity of the mafia phenomenon at the root – reads the provision – Given that every year in Cinisi there are thousands of visitors from all over the world, and many of them go to the area in order to pay homage to the extraordinary story of Peppino Impastato, an anti-mafia hero who contributed in a certain way, not only to the cultural change of Cinisi, but of the entire national territory “and” having acknowledged that, today, Cinisi is seen as the country of Sicilian redemption in the fight against the mafia thanks also to a community that has been able to constantly oppose the bullying of criminal association “,” found that in the whole Sicilian territory there are shamefully present “commercial lines li “of products such as souvenirs and gadgets where, sometimes indirectly and subtly, sometimes explicitly, the mafia character or the mafia phenomenon is mythicized or exalted and it is recognized that the aforementioned activity is to be considered, even in the hypothesis in which it does not integrate the case in point of crime, dangerous because it feeds a mafia subculture, sadly still present in certain layers of society, as, among other things, confirmed by a recent police operation conducted by the Palermo Public Prosecutor’s Office, compromising public order and security ” , the decision of the ordinanza. The sale of these gadgets for Palazzolo “mortifies the Cinisense community, which for years has been engaged in spreading the culture of legality and in contrasting the Mafia”. Therefore “orders a ban in the territory of the Municipality of Cinisi to sell any type of object, souvenir, gadget that praises or simply refers” in positive terms “, in any way and form, to the mafia and organized crime in general”. “Failure to comply with this ordinance is punished with a pecuniary administrative sanction ranging from € 100 to € 500”.
