There were also seven bodies among the migrants who landed in Lampedusa during the night. Around 3.30 the patrol boats of the Harbor Master’s Office brought 280 migrants of various nationalities to the Favaloro pier. Along with them also seven dead people, all men, of presumed Bengali origin. According to initial information, three were found lifeless aboard the boat intercepted about 24 miles south of the island by the military of the Financial Police and the Harbor Master’s Office. Four others, however, who appeared to the rescuers already in desperate conditions, died before arriving on the island on board the units of the Coast Guard. Everyone would die of hypothermia. After the transshipment of the migrants, the boat they were traveling on was left adrift. “Another tragedy, once again we mourn innocent victims. Here we continue to do our part amid a thousand difficulties, despite the fact that the Italian government and Europe seem to have forgotten Lampedusa and the Lampedusans. But we cannot go on alone for much longer”. Thus the mayor of Lampedusa, Totò Martello.
