AstraZeneca, Aifa: “A death from capillary leak syndrome after vaccine”

“In the first few days after vaccination with Vaxzevria *”, AstraZeneca’s anti-Covid vaccine, “very rare cases of capillary leak syndrome have been reported” or Cls. “In some cases there was a clinical history of Cls. One case was reported with a fatal outcome.” Therefore “Vaxzevria is currently contraindicated in subjects who have previously presented episodes of Cls”. This was underlined by the Italian Medicines Agency Aifa, updating health professionals on the Anglo-Swedish vaccine and in particular “on the points that emerged from the assessment of the risk of onset” of the syndrome “after vaccination” with the product. “Capillary leak syndrome – explains the national regulatory body – is characterized by acute episodes of edema that mainly affect the limbs, hypotension, haemoconcentration and hypoalbuminemia. Patients with an acute episode of Cls following vaccination require rapid diagnosis and treatment. Intensive supportive care is usually needed. ” Aifa points out that “the Summary of Product Characteristics of Vaxzevria (Rcp) is being updated to add this information”.
