Emanuele Scieri case, the former corporals of the Folgore Alessandro Panella of Cerveteri (Rome) and Luigi Zabara of Frosinone were sent to trial before the Assize Court. After the Car (the recruit training center) in Florence, he was transferred to the Gamerra barracks with other comrades on August 13th. After arranging the luggage in the dormitory he goes out with other peers for a walk in the center of Pisa and returns to the barracks at 10.15 pm, but at 11.45 pm he does not answer. Although several colleagues report that he has returned to the barracks, Scieri is considered not to have returned: at that time he is probably already dead or is in agony. The body remains at the foot of the stairs of a parachute drying tower – a place usually frequented by the ‘elders’ of the barracks – for three days. He was found only on August 16.In the summer of 2018 there was a turning point in the investigation, after the case had been filed as a suicide: the Public Prosecutor of Pisa arrested Alessandro Panella, corporal and head of the chamber to whom Scieri had been assigned. Andrea Antico and Luigi Zabara are also entered in the register of suspects. Subsequently, the two former officers are also investigated. The path to follow would be that of hazing: according to the parliamentary commission of inquiry, set up in 2016 and concluded in December 2017, in the barracks “serious acts of violence took place, not attributable to mere goliardia”. According to the accusation, on the evening of 13 August 1999 the three suspects after having undressed and after having beaten Scieri, they would have forced him to climb the drying tower and then they would have put pressure with the boots on the knuckles of the fingers. Hence the fall to the ground of the recruit and the escape of the corporals. According to the experts of the Scieri family, the young man died after a few hours of agony. An immediate rescue could have saved him is the element at the basis of the accusation of voluntary homicide given that the unintentional was prescribed in August 2017. Last June Antico, during the preliminary hearing, had made spontaneous declarations by reading a defensive memo with which he had reaffirmed his innocence. Antico claimed that he left on 12 August for a leave of absence and that he was not in Pisa when Scieri was killed and not even three days later when the body was found.
