Noury ​​(Amnesty): “Dramatic numbers of gender-based violence, prevention is fundamental”

The stories of Sarah Hegazi, Marielle Franco, Nadia Murad, Fatima Khalil, Mariam Al-Tayeb and many other courageous women who have defied dictatorships even at the cost of paying for their commitment to the promotion of human rights: their testimonies, collected in the book ‘The same fight, the same reason’ (People editore) by Riccardo Noury, spokesperson for Amnesty International Italia, were debated and commented on by the students of the VL of the Liceo Scientifico Ignazio Vian from Bracciano (Rome), in the presence of the author, as part of the ‘Cultura Movens’ project promoted by Professor Roberta Leoni. “The situation is dramatic on a global level, the numbers of gender-based violence have increased. We are facing, even in Italy, a phenomenon of a structural nature, linked to a patriarchal idea for which woman is considered an object. In Emilia Romagna alone – Noury ​​recalled, answering the students’ questions – there were four femicides in one week. The pandemic, then, made everything worse, with the medical lockdown that forced women victims of violence into their homes and also taking steps backwards in the world of work ”. To combat the phenomenon, “protection and prevention are fundamental, because punishment often comes when it is too late.” During the presentation of the book, which was also attended by the Councilor for Cultural Policies and Public Education of the Municipality of Bracciano, Emanuela Viarengo, primary school pupils and high school students who participated in a competition on the theme of gender-based violence and on the affairs of women all over the world have been awarded prizes to raise awareness on the importance to promote human rights.
