Avian flu, Ostia outbreak “under control”

“Veterinary services are doing a great job and the avian outbreak is under control at the moment.” This was underlined in a note by the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Lazio and Tuscany, in an update on the avian flu outbreak found in a farm in Ostia (Rome). “Today a meeting of the National Veterinary Crisis Unit was also held – informs the note – during which the National Reference Center reported, with respect to the sequencing of the virus isolated in Ostia, which is not the same virus circulating in Veneto , but it is a strain isolated in the past in wild birds from Northern Europe and Central Asia. In any case – it is specified – according to the National Reference Center, the viruses currently circulating, including the one isolated in Ostia, do not present risks of potential transmission from animal to human. The monitoring action carried out in the two protection areas continues and will continue to be subject to the measures provided for in the ordinance “.
