Artificial nutrition, from Policlinico Messina project for regional assistance network

“The main objective of this meeting is to bring models that are already present in other Italian regions and in Europe, in an attempt to create a project for a network of regional hospitals for artificial nutrition in Sicily”. To say the professor Claudio Romano Usod director of Gastroenterology of the Policlinico di Messina today during the national conference for “Artificial nutrition: towards new clinical and welfare models” organized together with ANNA, the national association Nourished Artificially. “The Messina Polyclinic – explains Romano – is the leader of this project which will have to be carried out in symbiosis with all the other regional realities. There are about 45 thousand patients in Italy who are unable to feed themselves orally and must do so artificially, so we are also talking about cancer patients, geriatrics and others who have greater needs. Today we want to be able to improve the quality of life and also the life expectancy of these patients and to manage their pathology well. “We need new clinical and care models, starting with de-hospitalization with the consequent home treatment directly at home, for malnourished children and adults suffering from chronic gastrointestinal, neurological and oncological diseases”. The president of the ANNA association Alessandra Rivella reiterated the importance of the project underlining: “This conference was organized in Sicily, because this region is one of the territories in which to start working with the creation of an artificial nutrition network. an important and useful challenge from the point of view of Nutrition stakeholders starting from patients who will be able to obtain an efficient and widespread service throughout the territory. service of the sick, but also for the economy of the health organization because the good management of patients, who have artificial nutrition problems, guarantees a good quality of life for them, but also a great saving.
