The DiaSorin Foundation announces the publication of the announcement for participation in the 6th edition of the national competition ‘Mad for Science’, (available at www.madforscience.fondazionediasorin.it), aimed at scientific and classical high schools with a path to enhance Biology with biomedical curvature and, starting from this edition, also to the Itis of the entire Italian national territory (state and equal), already equipped with a biolab or science laboratory. In the new edition of the Mad for Science Competition, the DiaSorin Foundation invites schools to develop projects consistent with the theme “One health” or “Systemic health”, that is the recognition of the fact that the health of human beings is closely linked to that of animals and the environment. “After having dedicated the last three years of the project to reflection on the sustainable development goals of the UN 2030 Agenda, which led to a total of 375 proposed projects and 9 winners starting from the 2021-2022 school year, we embrace a fundamental theme, forcefully returned to current events on the occasion of the current pandemic “, explains Francesca Pasinelli, president of the DiaSorin Foundation.” It is increasingly evident – he stresses – that no discipline or sector of society has, individually, sufficient knowledge and resources to prevent and deal with the emergence of new diseases in a globalized world. Therefore, it is necessary that the scientific community, the educational world and civil society collaborate in tackling the problem in a shared logic, aware of the fact that human and animal health and environmental protection are strongly correlated and therefore to be studied and protected together. ‘Mad for Science’ – he concludes – wants to stimulate the school world to spread this sensitivity and identify research projects that can make a useful contribution. “To participate in the competition, each school – reports a note – will have to follow the present application instructions on the website www.madforscience.fondazionediasorin.it and send your project idea by 3 December 2021. A Commission of experts in the scientific field will evaluate the project files received, selecting the most deserving projects which, through subsequent selections, will access the Mad for Science Challenge 2022. During the final, which will take place by 31 May 2022 in Turin, the 8 finalist schools will present their projects in front of a jury, made up of professionals from the scientific, academic and communication world, who will elect the winners. The total prize money of the competition is equal to 177,500 euros: the first classified school will be rewarded with the implementation of the biolab for a maximum value of 75 thousand euros, while the runner-up for a maximum amount of 37,500 euros. The jury will also award the Communication Award to the team that will be able to better disseminate their project, demonstrating both scientific skills and the ability to speak in public. The prize consists in the assignment of 15 thousand euros for the purchase of various laboratory material. The DiaSorin Foundation has also established the Finalist Award, worth 10 thousand euros, intended for teams that have reached the final but not winners of the above-mentioned prizes. Starting from the 2021/22 edition and for the next three years, moreover, ‘Mad for Science ‘is recognized as a’ Project for the enhancement of excellence ‘by the Ministry of Education for secondary school students. A further confirmation of the value and quality of the project, which so far has involved more than 1800 students and almost 400 teachers. While the boundaries of the next edition of the competition are outlined, the 5th edition of the ‘Mad for Science’ is currently in its final stages – the note informs – which will see the announcement of the winner in the Challenge on 7 October.
