‘Influenza Thermometer’ is born, 8 out of 10 Italians are looking for more information on vaccines

About 8 out of 10 Italians are looking for more information on vaccines, over 7 out of 10 would like a ‘personalized’ flu vaccine based on their age and condition, 59% are well aware that there are different types of vaccines for the flu, to be used on a case-by-case basis based on people’s age and health conditions, almost 7 out of 10 (69%) are willing to co-administer the anti-Covid vaccine and the flu vaccine preferably in November ( 37%) and in October (30%), because they consider a single appointment for the two vaccines as fundamental in organizational and logistical terms. This is what emerges from “Influenza Thermometer”, the survey conducted by Swg with the support of Seqirus, created with the aim of clarifying and promoting immunization campaigns. The survey also shows that more than 1 in 2 people (52%) plan to undergo the flu vaccine next season, with an increase of 8 percentage points compared to the May 2020 survey. During the pandemic period, the propensity grows to protect themselves against seasonal flu. The results of the research – conducted in two moments (18-24 May 2020 and 19-27 May 2021) were presented this morning during the press briefing attended by Riccardo Grassi, Swg Research Director, Alexander Domnich, of the Hygiene UO , Policlinico San Martino Irccs, Genoa and Maura Cambiaggi, General manager Seqirus Italy. “The survey, developed by Swg within the permanent ‘Influenza Thermometer’ observatory, was conducted on a sample of 2,523 adult citizens representative of the population by gender, age, geographical area and size of the municipality of residence – said Riccardo Grassi, Swg Research Director – This is a project created with the aim of periodically comparing how Italians’ perceptions of vaccination and more generally of their state of health can change and evolve over the months “. Today, Italians are positively re-evaluating the value of vaccination – it was underlined during the online meeting – with a growing trend among those who consider it essential for health, and rely more and more on experts. On the information front, the general practitioner remains the first authoritative source (89% is a guide), followed by the health institutions (Ministry, Region or Local Health Authority) (83%) and the pharmacist (81%). Instead, social networks are collapsing as an information point on the subject (only 24% of people would trust the information that comes from this source). More generally, however, the flu is still considered a disease not to be underestimated, even if last year the virus practically did not circulate: for about eight out of ten people this fact is linked to the greater number of people vaccinated and to restrictions with protective measures such as masks that have slowed down the transmission. Above all, it clearly emerges that even among adults the perception of Covid-19 and influenza as serious diseases and at all ages is spreading: only one in three people think that the risks are concentrated exclusively on the elderly. Then there is another fact: more than eight out of ten people consider that, continuing the Covid-19 pandemic with variants, those who catch the seasonal flu risk doubly of having complications and for this reason they recommend vaccination protection. “We are happy to have supported the birth of this interesting analysis project aimed at clarifying and promoting immunization campaigns – said Maura Cambiaggi, General manager of Seqirus Italia – In a context still driven by uncertainty about the circulation of viruses, we are more than ever committed to our mission to protect as many people as possible from seasonal flu. This confirms the strong propensity of our company to want to support on the one hand projects that have the aim of increasing people’s awareness of influenza viruses and vaccination, and on the other hand to continue to be proudly a solid, reliable and collaborative towards our NHS “.
