Covid, Vaia: “We are in the final phase, in the future with therapies we will no longer die”

“Today we live in a good situation and, in my opinion, we are in the terminal phase of this battle where the enemy is on the ropes and a ‘knockout’ is needed and I am referring to the weapons that we partly have and are partly building with experiments, monoclonal antibodies. The vaccine has shown very clearly, beyond some instrumental controversy, to be a deadly weapon. The future scenario? Once the emergency is overcome we have two paths ahead: to complete the vaccination cycle all over the world and then, more than chasing herd immunity, we must think that sooner or later the virus will be endemic and with the therapies we will get out of it. That is, we will get sick and heal but no one will die as has already happened with other infectious diseases “. This was underlined by the director of the Inmi Spallanzani of Rome, Francesco Vaia, in an interview that will soon be broadcast on the Sky channel ‘Doctor’s Life’, the first medical-scientific information television channel, published by Adnkronos Salute. “Am I too optimistic? No, I’m rational – remarks Vaia – because I firmly believe in science and research that must always be independent and work without partisan influences”. Returning to monoclonals, Vaia highlighted that “they are designed in Italy, by Professor Rappuoli, tested and then produced in our country – Vaia recalled – These therapies can be used in the early stages of Covid disease, and we already have experience of a ” more than 90% effective, but can be used for prophylaxis when we have people who have not had an antibody response compared to the vaccine because they are immunosuppressed, transplanted, dialysed or cancer patients. To these we give the vaccine, even third dose, but since the answer as some studies tell us may be only 50%, together we also give antibodies to overcome the acute phase and heal the person “.
