William Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ will be staged from 3 to 14 August at the Globe Theater ‘Proietti’ of Villa Borghese in Rome, with a large company of 17 actors, directed by director Riccardo Cavallo. “Midsummer night is a magical night and the title immediately reveals its dreamlike, unreal atmosphere even if, as it is specified, the night in which most of the action takes place is that of calendimaggio, the celebration of awakening. of nature in spring and not in summer: it is however the wish for a joyful awakening “, explains Cavallo in the director’s notes. The director observes: “Three worlds contrast with each other: the world of reality (that of Theseus, Hippolyte and the court), the world of theatrical reality (the artisans preparing for the performance) and the world of fantasy (that of spirits, shadows) But dreams can sometimes turn into nightmares: the quarrel between Oberon and Titania that reveals at a certain point a terrible upheaval in the course of the seasons, the relationship between Theseus and Hippolyte, the conqueror and his prey, the brutality of certain insults that lovers exchange under the influence of Puck’s magic … “. Written on the occasion of a wedding, this Scespirian work” is like a series of Chinese boxes. The greatness of Shakespeare lies in having known how to involve three different worlds, each with its own distinct language: that of the fairies which alternates with the free verse, songs and nursery rhymes, that of lovers dominated by love lyrics and that of craftsmen, in which the prose of o every day is interrupted by the clumsy parody of the courtly verse. The world is crazy and crazy is love. In this great madness of nature, the moment of happiness is short. A reference to the melancholy that accompanies the whole story “. (By Enzo Bonaiuto)
