The spas frequented by the poet Horace are studied with the drone

Start the study of the territory of Chianciano Terme and more generally of the Val di Chiana through drone surveys for the census of the archaeological areas, with the hope of also finding spas once dear to Orazio. Archeodrone Lab is the name of the new data acquisition program with the application of new digital methodologies, their scientific dissemination and dissemination for purposes of public utility. A project born from the synergy between the Civic Archaeological Museum of Chianciano Terme, the Superintendence of Archeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the Provinces of Siena, Grosseto and Arezzo, the Duke University based in Durham, North Carolina and which is based in the Restoration laboratory of the Chianciano Museum. The program, which is based on the use of non-destructive systems, offers secure data as has now been verified in other construction sites. In particular, the attention will focus on the study of the monumental Roman age site in Mezzomiglio, to be identified with the baths frequented by the poet Horace, as mentioned by the sources. “This will allow the acquisition of important preliminary data for the resumption of investigations on the ground which, following the acquisition of the area by the Municipality, may become an equipped archaeological site aimed at the knowledge of Roman thermalism and the ancient landscape”, explains the ‘councilor for culture of Chianciano Terme, Rossana Giulianelli. “The ambitious project involving the Superintendency responsible for the protection of the archaeological heritage, the Duke University which has the most sophisticated means for research of this type and the Chianciano Museum – concludes Giulio Paolucci , director of the Archaeological Museum – will allow a long-term reading of the territory and its most relevant monuments with otherwise undetectable information “.
