The Sicilian writer Giovanna Giordano nominated for the Premio Strega

The Sicilian writer Giovanna Giordano nominated for the Strega 2022 prize with “the scent of freedom” (Mondadori 2021). The author’s name has entered the new dozen titles selected for the prestigious literary prize and announced today according to the calendar that will end on March 1st. “A work in authentic countertrend, imbued with a classic and at the same time fantastic atmosphere that brings together the vocation of the great European storytellers from Vitaliano Brancati to Karen Blixen, recounting a long heroic (and comic, and sentimental, and dreamlike) journey”. These are the words with which Antonella Cilento wanted to report the novel to the Amici della Domenica, the historic jury of the award, many years after the candidacy in 2005 of a previous work by Giordano, presented at the time by Fernanda Pivano. A proposal that underlines “a language of calls and repetitions, sown with buoys of words, which the author weaves like an ancient storyteller”. It will then be the task of the steering committee, chaired by Melania Mazzucco, to select the twelve finalists admitted to compete for the Strega. After the dozen we will move on to the definition of the five and, finally, to the proclamation of the winner of the Premio Strega 2022, on 7 July.
