Netflix enlists Spielberg, more movies on the way

Netflix has announced that it has entered into a multi-year agreement with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners studio to make a series of original films starting at the end of this year. A sensational blow for the streaming platform, which brings home the collaboration with a director, one of the most important in the history of cinema, who has never been very close to the player’s policies. A staunch defender of theatrical vision, Spielberg expressed his perplexity in the presence of the films offered in streaming at the Oscars. The agreement does not question the historical relations between Amblin and Universal Pictures, which in December 2020 renewed the collaboration for another five years. The work with Netflix will parallel that with Universal, but this is not a first time: Amblin was in the production of Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial at Chicago 7, which found a distribution right on the platform.
