The animals return to the Slaughterhouse within ‘Re-Creature’

An imaginary redemption, in a dreamy and at the same time dystopian atmosphere: the summer programming of the Slaughterhouse is populated by animal presences that – ironic and ambiguous – will unexpectedly animate the Pelanda, up to the external spaces of the Slaughterhouse, to complete this occupation crepuscular and fantastic. Through a program of videos, installations and live performances, which will unfold throughout the summer, from 24 June to 22 August, ‘Re-Creatures’ curated by Ilaria Mancia contains an unprecedented reflection on the fundamental ambiguity that characterizes the relationship between humans it’s natural. The architecture of the Slaughterhouse – which does not hide its own bloody past – design the ideal place for a symbolic return, an unexpected subtle invasion. These chimeric creatures, which inhabit the perturbing border between domestic and wild, will invite the public to rethink their relationship with the environment, tracing the coordinates of a new possible ecosystem, which only the “open” space of art can make it possible to imagine. . “Maybe the animals can help us re-imagine that relationship or maybe just make us feel how much it is temporarily suspended in a tension towards an (im) possible future.” writes the curator. Three video installations from 24 June at Pelanda – From 24 June the spaces of La Pelanda will be inhabited by three video installations. In foyer 2 “Human Mask” by Pierre Huyghe starts from a true story: showing how, following the environmental disaster of Fukushima, in an empty restaurant a monkey, wearing a mask with a woman’s face from the Noh theater, continues to perform the service duties to which she has been trained, in a process of progressive alienation that well reverberates the human one. In the Galleria delle Tubche “The Odds (part 1)” by Revital Cohen and Tuur Van Balen brings together anesthetized racehorses, showgirls in a Macau casino and the anarcho punk performance by Steve Ignorant on a large LED screen, superimposing the flickering of pulsating lights, inspired by the visual persuasion techniques of Las Vegas. In foyer 3 Valentina Furian presents “Ciacco”, a selected video work that won the public announcement Cantica 21 and is the result of the research residencies and artistic production of the Mattatoio Prender-si cura. Starting from the figure of Dante’s greedy, the artist investigates the themes of animality, instinct and domestication, both as a form of domination and as an extreme adaptation to social dynamics. The live programming will start from 24 June at 10.30 pm with the concert by Lorenzo Senni, a multifaceted musician who puts into practice an extraordinary deconstruction of rave sound and culture, who in spring 2020 releases his debut album on Warp “Checkmate” and is crowned by Pitchfork as “Grandmaster of Unresolved Tension”, on 26 and 27 June, respectively from 9.30pm and 9pm, the public will be able to explore the powerful sound world of “To Speak Light Pours Out”, the performance by Kate McIntosh, created with the advice of Tim Etchells, who immerses the audience in a dense listening space and combines the layering of images and speech with the polyrhythmic beats and raw energy of voices and texts. On June 27th from 7.00 pm the artist Jacopo Benassi and the DJ and producer Lady Maru will present “Brutal Casual Magazine”, a fanzine with variable content that literally comes to life and is composed during live sets and occasional meetings that can happen before and after the performance: an ironic and surreal homage to the varied world of subcultures, through sound and photography. And the sounds with ebm, industrial, synthpunk and noise influences, with the addition of live photography, will converge, starting from 10.30 pm, also in the “brutal” live set, concert performance, of the duo, on the Central Stage. On the evening of June 26, the neon of Tim Etchells will light up, marking the entrance to Largo Marzi del Mattatoio with some words taken from the “Pillow Book” written by Sei Shōnagon shortly after the year 1000: “things that make the heart beat faster “. A fragment from an ancient diary becomes, in the form of a luminous sign, an extemporaneous invitation – which goes beyond the public and private sphere – to think about those things that arouse and animate emotions. Waiting for the arrival, from 20 July, of other mysterious creatures: an out-of-scale animal that will populate the external spaces of the Slaughterhouse, to remember how the impact of man on the environment is – despite the worrying proportions – deliberately ignored. The last ten days of July will represent a new moment of encounter with live performances, concerts, meetings and workshops, to dialogue with reality in unexpected ways, through language, body, matter and the relationships that are triggered with the surrounding environment. The free sound and movement workshops for adults and children of the recreation project will also continue in the spaces of La Pelanda, conducted by internationally renowned artists. The initiatives are promoted by ROMA Culture (culture.roma.it) and are part of the Roman Summer 2021 program.
