Programs mentioned, sketched, still not definitive. With the lists still to be closed and, in the center-left, also a coalition still to be built. But time is running out, the 2022 elections are approaching and the proposals are needed immediately, to make sense of the electoral campaign. Taxes are always making the most noise. The proposals, for now, are above all promises that are difficult to keep. “We will introduce a 23% flat tax to restart the economy and employment,” says Forza Italia leader Silvio Berlusconi. Today’s idea is the same as always, to lower taxes for everyone, but the costs and feasibility of the operation are variables that are postponed to tomorrow. The leader of the Lega Matteo Salvini always speaks of flat tax, but at 15%: “Today it concerns 2 million VAT numbers and can be extended to families and self-employed workers, as in dozens of countries in the world”. The number one of the Northern League makes taxes a question of identity, looking at what is happening on the other front, the one still under construction by the center left. “Talking about further taxes at the moment is unconscious: taxes on assets, inheritances, deaths, no. It is not the time for taxes, also because the taxes have been paid and overpaid on that money. On September 25, two are confronted. different ways of being in the world “. The reference is to the secretary of the Democratic Party Enrico Letta, who has relaunched another proposal that is not born today, a dowry of ten thousand euros for eighteen-year-olds to be financed with a tax on inheritance and donations exceeding 5 million euros at 20 percent. At the moment the Italian tax rate is 4%, among the lowest in Europe, and is valid only for the part of the inheritance exceeding one million euros, set as a deductible. The dowry would be intended for children who come from families in the low-medium income bracket but, even in this case, the cost of the operation is close to 3 billion euros. And, regardless of the merit and sustainability of the proposal, one fact has already been established: it lends itself to the easy simplification of the election campaign, ‘the left raises its taxes.’ A question and answer via Twitter between Giuseppe Conte and Giorgia Meloni foreground the hypothesis, relaunched by the leader of FdI, of fiscally favoring businesses that produce employment: “In Italy, taxes on labor are too high. Welfare is not needed to solve the employment problem and relaunch the economy. The wealth of one The state is created by companies and workers. The more you hire, the less taxes you pay is our proposal “. The reply from the former premier claims the paternity of the proposal / promise. “Dear Giorgia, I have already heard this. In fact, I have already done it. With the reliefs to businesses to hire young people, women and with” Southern tax reductions “, included in the last Maneuver of Conte II, about 1.8 million of people got a job. Oh yeah: you didn’t vote for it! “. We are only at 5 August, we will continue to talk about taxes every day, at least until 25 September. Then, when there will be a new government and reality will have to be dealt with, we will see what happens to the proposals, and the promises. (By Fabio Insenga)
