The launch of a national digital currency or CBDC converges the interest of almost all central banks: a recent research by the Bank for International Settlements shows that 86% of government institutions are actually studying solutions in this sense, 60% are already experimenting with the technology and 14% are already in the implementation phase of a pilot project. Surely the recent pandemic has helped to digitize the economy and consequently people have shown greater attention and interest also in the launch of digital currencies by central banks. A recent report by deep tech firm Guardtime, carried out in ten countries, including major European and Asian economies, as well as the United States and the UAE, reveals how 64% of adults would be interested in using a digital currency launched by the central bank and the government of your country. Only 10% of respondents said they would never use a central bank digital currency (CBDC). One third of the adults surveyed would be in favor of converting their savings into CBDC within one month and 26% would do so within six months. Only 11% say they would never convert their savings into a CBDC. As for the salary, however, about 30% of the interviewees are in favor of the possibility of receiving payment in CBDC within a month and another 27% would be available for transition within six months. About 12% would never agree to be paid in a CBDC. The same research shows that consumers would not necessarily want to give up on cash, even though 31% of adults would be willing to make more than half of their CBDC transactions within one month from a possible launch plus another 28% willing to do so within six months. Among the features that consumers pay more attention to in this area, transaction privacy comes first, followed by ease of use, especially internationally and when an internet connection is not available. Regarding the benefits of national digital currencies, the report focuses instead on the possibilities of making commerce more efficient, guaranteeing greater financial access to millions of people and reducing crime in addition to tax evasion.
