Hot, boom in purchases of water and ice cream

The record heat wave, in Lombardy and more generally in Northern Italy, coincides with a surge in purchases of water, ice cream, ice lollies and all those products generally used with rising temperatures. This was revealed by the ‘Il Gigante’ Supermarket Observatory (a large-scale distribution group, with about seventy points of sale in Northern Italy, fifty of which in Lombardy), highlighting how the heat has produced – compared to the traditional trend of this period of the year – important commercial effects. Indeed, there was a strong increase in the sale of bottles of water (+ 30%), watermelons, melons and peaches (+ 25%) and of ice lollies and ice cream (+ 35%). Fresh foods such as mozzarella, slightly seasoned cheeses and yogurt are also doing well, with + 20%. The requests for fans are also increasing. “In this case – explains Giorgio Panizza, director of the group – the increase in purchases can be quantified in the order of 20%, with choices increasingly oriented towards design research and with a clear inclination towards column products compared to classic fans. An orientation, that towards fans compared to air conditioners, which goes above all in the direction of cost containment, also in terms of energy saving “.
