Financial uncertainty weighs on Italians, the propensity to save is growing

Deep uncertainty about the financial outlook which pushes up the propensity to save of Italians. This is what emerges from a Bva-Doxa research conducted for Groupama Assicurazioni on the occasion of the second edition of the ‘Change Lab, Italy 2030’ Observatory on trends from now to 2030. Data in hand 42% of Italians said they were worried about the its economic prospects, young people between 18 and 34 years of age (51%) are most affected. This uncertainty consequently leads to a greater propensity to save at 33%, with a rate rising to 40% in adults between 35 and 54 years of age. Family and children are today at the top of the ranking of the most expensive assets to protect for almost half of the Italian population (47%); health follows (41%) but also assets and savings (30%). For 4 out of 10 Italians (39%) it becomes a priority to guarantee economic peace of mind to their families, making the capital set aside, a percentage that rises to 54% in families with small children. The research also reveals that more than 1/3 of respondents (34%) would have liked to invest their savings, but only 20% actually did during the pandemic. It should be noted that 14% of Italians have not yet managed to realize this desire (percentage which rises to 27% in the case of young people) while 35% of the interviewees did not have the opportunity to make economic investments. To increase the capital saved (for 46%) and to ensure an economically calmer future for oneself and loved ones (31%), but also not to keep too much money on the current account (50%) are the main reasons underlying the investments made.
