Space, Tyvak International: “Success of the new Hera-Milani mission step”

The Preliminary Design Review of the “Hera-Milani” interplanetary mission has been successfully completed. As the European Space Agency’s Hera mission prepares for its journey to the ‘Didymos’ binary asteroid system in 2024, Tyvak’s ‘Milani’ nanosatellite is ready to go into operation. Milani is a 6U satellite created specifically for the European Space Agency by Tyvak International in Turin, together with a consortium of partner companies, universities and research institutes from Italy, Finland and the Czech Republic. Milani is named after the Italian mathematician and astronomer Andrea Milani, a leading figure in the European space scientific community and a pioneer in the study of asteroids and the risks associated with them. The mission is supported by the Italian Space Agency. In a launch scheduled for 2024, Milani will be transported by the mother ship Hera and will take 3 years to travel from low Earth orbit to the Didymos asteroid binary system. The satellite, which is expected to reach the asteroids in 2027, will be used to detect the surface with a hyperspectral imager by combining visible and near-infrared wavelengths to examine its composition. It will also carry an Italian-made dust detector capable of detecting tiny volatile particles and light organic matter. “The Preliminary Design Review is a fundamental step towards defining the mission and architecture of the system” explained Fabio Nichele, CEO of Tyvak International. “We are proud to share the success achieved by this important milestone and congratulate ESA and our project partners. We look forward to starting Phase C and continuing to develop this Mission with enthusiasm and dedication” he said Nichele. Ian Carnelli, Hera project manager for the European Space Agency, finally underlined: “We are extremely happy with the progress of the Milani project, with this further step forward we are getting closer and faster to reaching the Didymos binary asteroid system. We congratulate the entire Tyvak team and its international partners for the excellent work they have done. We too look forward to kicking off Phase C. ”
